Teeth Whitening

So many of life’s little pleasures stain discolour our teeth and sadly, leave us feeling less attractive. Coffee, red wine, turmeric, smoking, and tea are just a few. Luckily, here at the practice we have two whitening systems to offer a solution for this problem.

Here’s a few FAQ’s

Is it safe?

YES! If carried out by a dental professional. Studies have shown that whitening teeth using this technique is perfectly safe on teeth, cheeks and gums. There are problems with the bleaching kits that are purchased over the counter. Although they are inexpensive, they normally contain an acid rinse, which can thin down the enamel of the teeth and cause significant and irreversible tooth damage. It is important to understand that existing crowns and fillings will be unaffected by the whitening process and may present an aesthetic problem when whitening of the remainder of the teeth occurs. Your dentist will talk to you about how important this may be in your mouth.

How long does it take?

This depends on the amount of lightening you want to achieve and the original shade of the teeth. If your teeth are quite dark or very yellow or grey or if you have antibiotic staining it will take longer. If you wear your custom made trays for at least 3-4 hours in the day and/or wear the trays overnight for 14 consecutive days you will get the fastest results. If you cannot wear the trays for a few days because life intrudes or your teeth become sensitive, it does not matter. You can whiten your teeth according to your own schedule.

Side effects?

Sensitivity of teeth is the most common side effect. This occurs usually around the necks of the teeth where the gums may have receded. If you are experiencing any sensitivity you should stop whitening your teeth. You can resume after about 2-3 days. Putting toothpaste for sensitive teeth into the bleaching trays overnight will usually stop the sensitivity faster. Alternatively you can rub the de-sensitising toothpaste into the gum margins with your finger 5 times per day for a few days. These symptoms always disappear within 1-3 days after interruption or completion of the treatment. We also have a milder whitening gel available designed for people whose teeth are generally a bit sensitive anyway. If you have sensitive teeth it will probably just take you a bit longer to get the colour change you want.

How long do the results last?

Normally the new whiter colour of your teeth keeps very well. This is, however, lifestyle dependant. If you smoke or drink lots of coffee, red wine, etc. your teeth may darken again slightly over time. You can buy individual tubes of whitening gel from us if needed to ‘top up’ the colour every 6 – 12 months. (Use the gel in the original trays as before for just 1 or 2 days/nights).

How will it feel?

Teeth feel very clean, fresh and brighter after the whitening procedure. The gel also has an indirect but positive effect on gum health. What happens if the teeth do not whiten as much as I want? Rarely, even after using all the provided gel as directed you will not get the desired colour change or you may even get some uneven whitening. Please do not worry. You may need a stronger whitening gel or/and to continue the process over a longer period. Some teeth just require more effort to get them to change colour. Your dentist will advise you (There may be an additional charge if further tooth whitening gel is needed).

White Dental Beauty with NOVON®

What is NOVON® and how does it work?

NOVON® is the active ingredient in White Dental whitening gels. It is a whitening compound containing Hydrogen Peroxide, urea and sodium tripolyphosphate which produces a pH jump into the alkaline pH range upon application. This”pH jump” enhances the release of perhydroxyl ions for a faster whitening effect.

What strengths are available and what are the wear times?

White Dental Beauty gels are available in four different strengths, which determines how long each gel should be worn for during each application. There are four strengths available: – 6% Hydrogen Peroxide: the strongest EU accepted gel, wear from as little as 30-90 minutes a day – 16% Carbamide Peroxide: high strength gel, wear from as little as 1-2 hours a day – 10% Carbamide Peroxide: the original strength for overnight gels, wear for 2-4 hours a day or overnight – 5% Carbamide Peroxide: a mild gel for people with sensitive teeth, wear for 2 hours per day or overnight. Higher strength gels often achieve results faster, whereas lower strengths reduce the risk of sensitivity.

Can I suffer with sensitive teeth during whitening?

Whitening with Peroxide has often been a barrier for patients with sensitive teeth. With the help of NOVON®, White Dental Beauty offers these patients the ability to whiten their teeth using an extra mild formula containing 5% carbamide peroxide. Although the gel contains lower levels of peroxide, it can achieve the same results as a standard 10% carbamide peroxide gel. This means teeth are less exposed to the sensitivity issues higher concentrations can cause* and means patients with sensitive teeth can whiten their teeth comfortably. *A new three-component formulation for the efficient whitening of teeth (Carbamide Plus) Hyland et al Clinical Oral Invest (2015) Carbamide Plus is now known as NOVON® All White Dental Beauty gels carry a high water content to prevent dehydration of the tooth which is believed to help with sensitivity and provide consistent, reliable results.

For best results, how long must the gap between bleaching and bonding be?

Bonding may be required to get the desired aesthetic result for your smile. This is Jacy’s forte and usually follows treatment with or without Invisalign. Don’t worry, this is only relevant for those patients that are having a smile makeover

As oxygen can stay present in the teeth for about a week, we recommend waiting around two weeks between tooth whitening and bonding. This way, you can ensure the bond is not compromised.

How do I store my White Dental Beauty kits correctly?

As they do not need to be stored in the fridge, we recommend keeping them at a temperature of between 2-24 degrees centigrade to ensure the best results. Each kit also has a long shelf life of up to 24 months.

Do White Dental Beauty gels contain animal products and are they certified Kosher?

If your patient requires Kosher products, White Dental Beauty is certified Kosher. White Dental Beauty is Pareve non-Passover and therefore suitable for Vegans.

How much does it cost?

£395 for upper and lower custom made trays, whitening gel and all the time with the dentist or hygienist providing the treatment. There is 20% reduction for patients on our Practice Plan.
